A Condensed History
The Heritage Rooms exhibit the simplicity of early toy trains.
They are not themed but focus on the running of toy trains and accessories as might be remembered from your youth. Lionel, American Flyer and Marx in O, S and standard gauges predominate.
Once space became available in the historic Allen house, provided
by the city of Central, plans where discussed to create a space for
Heritage trains. The initial build was accomplished primarily by
Dale Reynolds, Mac McMillin and Curt Ehmann all of whom
donated expertise, time, materials and trains.
As donations increased, plenty of locomotives, rolling stock and
accessories came in from the public and other members. By 2009
the initial bench work was mostly completed for the American Flyer
layout with the Lionel layout following in 2014. Jim Selton and other members discussed the use of that space and the basic design. Bench work was then constructed. Don Baldwin and Jim Alexander were primary constructors, Mac McMillin served as an expert consultant and Lowell Holt completed the primary wiring.
In 2016 managerial responsibility was transferred to Sage Viehe for both heritage rooms. At that time some layout reorganization was initiated to give visitors a close-up look as well as the opportunity to operate many of the accessories.
The goal of both layouts is to exhibit the joy of playing with toy trains. No attempt is made to model a themed railroad. It is designed to allow the public to once again experience that first train and to let the newest generations share that surprise.

The CRM has 2 Museum Heritage Layout Pages in the works. One page will highlight our American Flyer (S Scale) Collections, layout and history. The second page will be all about O Scale, our Layout and Collections that we have from Lionel, Marx and others.
